Franciacorta: The Italian Sparkling Wine

Franciacorta is a wine-producing area covering about 2,900 hectares, characterized by a favorable microclimate and a moraine-origin soil rich in minerals. These unique geographical and climatic conditions contribute to creating an ideal environment for growing grapes destined for the production of classic method sparkling wines

The History of Franciacorta

The history of Franciacorta as a wine region dates back to ancient times, but it is only in recent decades that it has gained international fame.

The recognition of the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) in 1995 marked a turning point, solidifying Franciacorta’s reputation as a producer of high-quality sparkling wines.

The Classic Method

Franciacorta is produced exclusively using the classic method, the same method used for Champagne. This process involves a second fermentation in the bottle, which gives the wine its fine and persistent bubbles. The main grapes used are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and, to a lesser extent, Pinot Blanc.

The Types of Franciacorta

There are different types of Franciacorta, each with unique characteristics:

The Production Process of Franciacorta

The production of Franciacorta begins with an early harvest to ensure high acidity in the grapes.

After harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed, and the resulting must undergoes fermentation. The second fermentation takes place in the bottle, where the wine remains in contact with the yeast for a minimum period of 18 months, which can extend up to 60 months for the reserves.
